Hearing a beat in the headphones is not the same as your brain changing state. Binaural beats are an audio illusion created when each ear receives a slightly different tone. Research suggests possible effects on attention, anxiety or sleep, but results depend on the protocol and the evidence is not settled.[1][2][3] Use them as optional sound, not as a treatment or a guaranteed route into a named brain state.
What a binaural beat is
If one ear receives a tone at one frequency and the other receives a nearby frequency, the listener may perceive a rhythmic beat that is not present as a separate sound in either channel.[1] That is the binaural beat. Headphones are normally used so the channels stay separate. Ordinary speaker playback may not deliver a distinct tone to each ear.
This perceptual effect is real. The larger claims often attached to it are a different question. Hearing a beat does not by itself show that the brain has entered a precise state, that sleep architecture has changed, or that attention will improve.
Why the research sounds more certain than it is
Studies choose different carrier tones, beat frequencies, listening durations, comparison sounds and outcomes. Some expose people before a task, others during it. Some combine beats with music or visual stimulation. Pooling those studies can answer whether there is a signal worth investigating, but it cannot hand every listener a reliable recipe.
The 2019 meta-analysis included 22 studies and reported an overall medium effect across memory, attention, anxiety and pain outcomes.[1] A newer review of ten trials in young adults reported improvements in at least one domain in many studies, but also stressed small samples and substantial variation.[2]
Negative findings matter too. In a study of 58 healthy adults, a gamma-frequency binaural beat did not improve reaction time, error rate, attention-network measures or self-rated anxiety against the control tone.[3] That result does not disprove every protocol. It does make a universal focus claim hard to defend.

Run the steps in order. A fair personal test separates setup from outcome, and it leaves quiet or ordinary music as valid answers.
- Check the setup — A binaural beat needs two slightly different tones delivered separately to each ear, usually through stereo headphones.
- Choose one job — Use the session for winding down or for one focus task. Do not judge sleep, anxiety and productivity at once.
- Keep volume comfortable — The beat does not become more effective because the track is louder.
- Compare honestly — On another day, try quiet or ordinary audio under similar conditions.
- Keep, change or stop — Use the option that feels workable. Stop for headache, discomfort or agitation.
The result is personal preference data, not proof that your brainwaves were entrained or that a condition was treated.

For focus: test the task, not the marketing
Choose one ordinary task that you can repeat, such as reading for twenty minutes or clearing a small set of emails. Keep notifications, time of day and caffeine roughly similar. Try the binaural track once and quiet or ordinary audio another time.
Notice whether you started more easily, stayed with the task, made fewer errors or simply liked the sound. Preference is useful. It is not the same as a measured cognitive improvement. Comfort, volume and personal response matter more than a label such as alpha, theta or gamma.
For sleep: make it part of a wind-down, not a sleep test
Binaural audio may be pleasant at bedtime, and some trials include sleep outcomes.[2] The evidence does not support promising that a named frequency will produce deep sleep or replace treatment for persistent insomnia.
Keep the volume comfortable and set the track to end if continuous headphone use bothers you. The World Health Organization's safe-listening work treats sound level and exposure time as the important hearing variables.[4] Louder is not more therapeutic.
If sound keeps you monitoring whether you are asleep yet, switch it off. Quiet, ordinary music or a spoken practice may fit better.

Do I need headphones?
Usually, yes. The classic binaural setup sends a different tone to each ear. A speaker track may still be relaxing audio, but it is not the same delivery.

The evidence does not identify one dependable frequency for everyone. Choose on comfort and response, not on a brainwave promise.
Can I use a track while working?
You can test it during a low-risk task. Do not use isolating headphones where you need to hear traffic, alarms, people or equipment.
