Extended Exhale (2:1)

The simplest parasympathetic switch. Inhale for 4, exhale for 8 — the longer exhale tells the nervous system to stand down. A foundational technique with nothing extra.

Extended Exhale (2:1)

4-0-8-0

How to Practice

Inhale slowly through the nose for 4 counts. Exhale through the nose for 8 counts — smooth, unhurried, complete. Repeat. If 4:8 feels too long, start at 3:6. The ratio matters more than the count.

Tips

The 2:1 ratio is the active ingredient.
If the exhale is rushed, slow the inhale instead of forcing a longer out-breath.
Use anytime you want to downshift the nervous system quickly.

Safety Notes

  • Stop if lightheaded.
  • Do not force the exhale longer than is comfortable.
